Geofence: what it means
DefinitionA geofence is a virtual boundary drawn around a location, such as a customer's property, that triggers an action when a tracked phone or vehicle enters or leaves it. Field software uses geofences to mark arrival and departure and to start or stop a visit timer.
How it works in a service business
The benefit is less tapping: the crew arrives, the system logs it, and the timecard reflects the visit. It can also confirm that a job was truly visited. The tradeoff is accuracy. A small radius around a house may miss because of weak location, while a large one may trigger when a truck merely drives by. A common mistake is trusting automatic arrival times without a manual override. Allow edits with a note, and review exceptions. Be clear with staff about what the fence records. Choose a radius suited to the property type, larger for farms and acreage, smaller for dense streets, and test it with real drives before using it for pay.
Example
A truck crosses the boundary around a client's yard. The visit is stamped as arrived, and the timer starts. When the truck leaves, it stamps departure.
