Carrier registration: what it means

Glossary term. Reviewed 2026-10-07. Process: Reminders and texting.

DefinitionCarrier registration is the process of telling mobile carriers who your business is and what texts you plan to send, so they will deliver them. In the United States it is required before sending business text messages from local numbers at any real volume.[1]

How it works in a service business

Expect to provide your legal business name, address, a tax or business identifier where it applies, a website, and sample messages. The provider submits this for review. Approval is not instant, and a rejected application must be corrected and resubmitted. The tradeoff is delay against deliverability. A common mistake is registering a brand name that does not match the website, or sample messages that look like marketing when you only plan to send reminders. Give accurate information, show how customers opt in, and mention how they can stop messages. Do not promise customers a start date for texting until approval is confirmed, and keep a copy of what you submitted for later changes.

Example

A lawn care owner submits the company name, website and two sample reminders. The first attempt is returned because the website does not mention texting, so a consent line is added.
